Breast Cancer Facts
& Breast Cancer Prevention

Regular exercise can help with breast cancer prevention, and if you're a survivor it can also help prevent it from returning. Breast cancer and exercise combined can reduce your risk of it returning again or it can reduce your risk of ever getting it.

According to BreastCancer.org, observation suggests that increased physical activity is linked to breast cancer prevention, but exactly how is still unclear. Also, knowing the breast cancer facts can keep you ahead of this nasty disease, preventing it from invading your body.

Exercising will improve your heart rate, help you to sleep better and improve your mental health. We have to keep our bodies as healthy as we can, you're only given one body, take care of it!

One of the biggest downsides of cancer, besides cancer itself, is the toll it takes on your state of mind, all the negative things come to mind. You need to stay as positive as possible. Our minds are one of the most powerful tools ever!

You know the saying...stress can kill. If you stay negative, you bring negative energy. You don't want to stress yourself out so much that it leads to cancer (I believe that stress combined with how we take care of ourselves physically trigger diseases within our bodies).

Exercise Intensity

It's noted that many studies have shown a link between regular moderate-to-intense exercise and breast cancer prevention.

Some researchers think that doing regular intense exercise lowers the risk by reducing estrogen levels.

Estrogen is what can cause the cancer cells to develop and grow, less estrogen in the body could lower the risk.

Along with a healthy diet and healthy lifestyle choices, regular exercise is one of the best things all women can do to keep the risk as low as possible.

This study adds to other research suggesting that higher intensity exercise aids in breast cancer prevention more than light or moderate exercise.

Regular exercise also helps keep your physical and mental health in top shape. No matter how old you are, it's never too soon or too late to get moving!

Exercise Benefits Chemo/Radiation Patients

Chemotherapy and radiation therapy are both forms of adjuvant therapy. Adjuvant therapy is treatment administered after surgery aimed to reduce the chance that the cancer will come back.

An expert on this disease with the American Cancer Society (ACS) says the study provides scientific evidence in line with results reported informally by some survivors.

"Given the anecdotal evidence, it's not surprising to find out that exercise provides a benefit," says Debbie Saslow, PhD, director of breast and cervical programs for the ACS.

"And most women today are going to survive breast cancer," notes Saslow.

"Once they do that, they'll want to reduce their chances of a recurrence, avoid heart disease, and deal with the other general health concerns that come with growing older," notes Saslow.

"Regular, moderate exercise can help these women in those ways as well," she adds.

How Much Exercise is Effective?

You don't have to be at the gym 24/7.

Three to five hours a week of moderate-paced activities gives you the most protection from breast cancer.

Simple things like brisk walking, jogging, hiking, bicycling, swimming or any other activity that gets you moving and your heart rate up.

For prevention of recurrence, the American Cancer Society recommends that you exercise for 45 to 60 minutes at least five days a week of above normal activities.

Also, women should not think of exercise as a replacement for standard treatment, and it's not the only factor that could influence a woman's survival.

Women whose current physical activity was equal to a couple of hours of brisk walking every week had an 18% lower risk than women who didn't get moving.

Women who got more than 10 hours of this type of exercise each week lowered their risk by about 22%.
