Learn to Breathe Right & Use
Breathing to Lose Weight

Learning to breathe right with deep breathing exercises can act as a connection to the functions of our body we generally do not have conscious control of.

Breathing is much more than just taking in oxygen and getting rid of carbon dioxide. You can actually use breathing to lose weight! Deep breathing exercises can result in improved energy and weight loss.

We breathe oxygen into the body from the air around us. While the oxygen we get doesn't actually hold useable energy, it is the key that unlocks the energy that's stored from the foods we eat.

Did you know that breathing is the only bodily function that we do both voluntarily and involuntarily?

Poor breathing robs our body of energy and negatively affects our mental alertness. Unless we practice to breathe correctly, getting older only affects the respiratory system negatively.

Learning to use proper breathing techniques is one of the most beneficial things that can be done for both short and long term health.

What you will gain from this article:

Proper breathing is both a skill and a natural body function.

Did you know that with each breath, your entire spine gathers and lengthens? Likewise with each inhale your torso widens and with each exhale it narrows.

Poor breathing patterns can seriously affect your physical health as well as your mental and emotional well being.

"Chest Breather" or "Abdominal Breather"?

You can easily see if you are a "chest breather" by placing one of your hands on your chest and the other hand on your abdomen.

As you breathe, see which hand moves up more. If your hand on your chest rises more, you are a chest breather. If your other hand rises more, you are an abdominal breather.

Breathing through your chest is not effective because a considerable amount of blood flow occurs in the lower part of the lungs, the top area of the lungs have limited expansion in the chest.

If you look at a picture of your lungs, you'll notice how the upper portion of your lungs are smaller and the bottom portion is bigger.

So if you're breathing through your chest, there's limited air expansion.

If you breathe through your abdomen then you'll get the most oxygen your lungs can give, so teach yourself to breathe right!

Benefits of being an "Abdominal Breather"

Abdominal breathing is also known as diaphragmatic breathing.

The diaphragm is the large muscle located between the chest and the abdomen. It's attached all around the lower ribcage and has strands going down into the lumbar vertebrae. When it contracts it's forced downward causing the abdomen to expand.

When we breathe deep, the up and down movement of the diaphragm, combined with the in and out movement of the belly, ribcage, and lower back, helps to detoxify our inner organs and promote blood flow.

By expanding the air pockets in our lungs and improving blood flow, abdominal breathing also helps prevent infection of the lung and other tissues.

Most of all it is an excellent tool to stimulate the relaxation response that results in less tension and an overall sense of well being.

Learn to Breathe Right

You can train the body to improve its breathing technique just like learning to ride a bike or playing sports.

With regular practice you will breathe right from the abdomen most of the time, even while you're sleeping.

Learning to breathe right can result in improved energy throughout the day.

The extra oxygen your giving your body from deep breathing exercises is now moving through your bloodstream, slightly increasing your blood flow, and getting rid of excess waste and fat. All that in a matter of just knowing how to breathe right!

What? Did I say fat? Yes, I said FAT, you can actually use breathing to lose weight with deep breathing exercises.

Improving your breathing techniques will improve your metabolism to burn off unwanted fat.

Make an effort to take deep, purposeful breaths. Even small adjustments in the way you breathe can increase your energy and oxygen intake while helping to relax your body.

We all can benefit from becoming more aware of the way we breathe and learning to breathe right.
